There's no question 2012 was a massive year in music. From Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" to Psy's "Gangnam Style," pop music was infiltrated with chart-toppers from across all genres. With so much excitement surrounding these songs, MTV is celebrating the year's end with a countdown declaring our picks from the past 12 months.
This Monday, starting at 8 a.m. on AMTV, we'll be rolling out the "Best Songs of the Year," which was voted on by music experts throughout the network. While tabulating the ballots, we saw nominations for every big name in pop culture, including Katy Perry, One Direction, Justin Bieber, and Kanye West. But with so much talent in 2012, not even half of this year's frontrunners made the cut.
Although only MTV staffers determined our list, that didn't stop some of your favorite celebs from weighing in. While some stars were rooting for their own projects — "The song of the year was 'Mercy,'" Big Sean told about his feature on the G.O.O.D. Music track — others spread the love — "I'd say 'Payphone' by Maroon 5," Jason Derulo said.
Even though Phillip Phillips has spent 28 consecutive weeks on the Billboard charts with his hit single "Home," the season 11 winner of "American Idol" said he would crown a "Canadian Idol" with the title for song of the year.
"How could you not listen to 'Call Me Maybe' this year?" Phillips asked. "I think everybody knows that song."
But it's not just musicians getting in the action. Chris Tucker praised Adele for her single "Skyfall." "Everything she do, I love what she does," the "Rush Hour" actor said.
After much consideration, "Parks and Recreation" star Aziz Ansari felt the song of the year should be awarded to a hip-hop artist. "Song of the year? Maybe 'Pop That,'" he said, referring to French Montana's first single from his debut studio album Excuse My French featuring Rick Ross, Drake and Lil Wayne.
Which songs do you think will make MTV's list? Tune into AMTV at 8 a.m. to find out!
