The Two And A Half Men star is said to have filed papers at Los Angeles Superior Court requesting a dissolution of his marriage to his third wife Brooke Mueller, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
Sheen listed their date of separation as Christmas Day 2009 – the same day that he assaulted Mueller during a festive break in Aspen, Colorado, which led to domestic violence charges being brought against him.
The Wall Street star’s career was rumoured to be in jeopardy last week after he allegedly wrecked a New York hotel suite in a drunken tantrum, following an argument with prostitute Capri Anderson.
The incident occurred less than three months after he admitted a charge of third-degree assault following his bust-up with Mueller.
Last week, Mueller confirmed for the first time that she and Sheen were separated, and today the 45-year-old actor made the split official by filing for divorce.
Court documents, signed by Sheen and his lawyer Mark Gross, reveal that the couple have a prenuptial agreement and that the former Spin City star is requesting joint legal and physical custody of his twin sons with Mueller.
According to US reports, the couple – who wed in May 2008 – signed a “stipulated judgment” earlier this year, which laid out the division of their property.
While Mueller gets their 2009 Mercedes S600, nursery furniture, guest-bedroom furniture and a lump sum of $757,689.70, Sheen reportedly gets to keep a 2009 Escalade Cadillac and their $6.4m home.
Sheen has also agreed to pay Mueller $55,000 a month in child support for their sons Bob and Max, who were born last year on 14 March.
