The 'Kiss Kiss' hitmaker attacked the 23-year-old singer, his then-girlfriend, in 2009, leaving her with a split lip and a multitude of facial cuts, and his mum – who is a victim of domestic violence of herself – thinks he needs to open up about the situation in order to "move on with his own life".
Joyce Hawkins told Sister 2 Sister magazine: "I think he really needs to talk about the situation in itself, what actually happened to Rihanna, so that he can get that out for himself.
"He has to learn to deal with it and go on with his life. This is something that happened; it was a huge mistake, it was not good at all. But he is still a human being and we all make mistakes and we live and we go on with it. But he has to own it, deal with it and move on with his life."
Rihanna recently admitted she doesn't expect to ever "make up" with the 22-year-old singer but agreed to have the terms of his five-year restraining order against her relaxed as it was stopping him from attending events important to his career.
She said: "It doesn't mean we're gonna make up, or even talk again. It just means I didn't want to object to the judge. We don't have to talk again ever in my life. I just didn't want to make it more difficult for him professionally.
"What he did to me was a personal thing. It had nothing to do with his career. Saying he has to be a hundred feet away from me, he can't perform at awards shows, that definitely made it difficult for him. That was the only thing it was going to change, so I didn't care."
