Christian Bale and Rooney Mara are both targets for Spike Lee as the US remake of Oldboy gathers pace.
First mooted in 2007 as a vehicle for Will Smith, the project is beginning to take concrete shape, first with the appointment of Lee to the chair, and now news that top stars are being lined up for leading roles.
Josh Brolin has already been confirmed for the lead role, as a man freed from forced captivity seeking revenge on those who kidnapped him.
Twitchfilm reports that Mara, who has finished work on another remake, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, hasn't officially been offered the lead female role, but is Lee's number one choice.
Bale, currently shooting The Dark Knight Rises, is said to be the favourite to take on the lead villain.
Production is set to get underway by the end of the year, with a release scheduled for sometime in 2012.
