A Chinese government official has claimed that Christian Bale should be ashamed of himself, after he attempted to visit an activist under house arrest whilst in the country to promote a state-backed film.
The Dark Knight Rises star was physically stopped by security forces from seeing Chen Guangcheng last week, with a CNN crew Bale was travelling with, who managed to record the scuffle.
When asked if the publicity had been embarrassing for the Chinese government, foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin replied that it was Bale who should feel shame, rather than China, The Guardian reports.
Bale was in the communist run country to promote The Flowers Of War, which has been submitted by China for an Oscar.
Liu said: "He was not invited to fabricate news or shoot films in a certain village."
The Flowers of War is on general release.
