Southbank Centre has announced Damon Albarn will join the line-up for the Tony Allen Review - celebrating the legendary drummer's extraordinary career at Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 13 September.
One of the pioneers of Afrobeat, and one of the greatest drummers of all time, Tony Allen will perform at the venue as part of the Africa Utopia festival.
Allen will be joined onstage by star guests including Grammy Award-winning master kora player Toumani Diabaté and his son Sidiki (the debut performance of these three musicians); Tony's long-time collaborator and friend Damon Albarn; as well as the French-Malian rapper Oxmo Puccino.
This one-off UK performance is one of only a handful of appearances worldwide by the group this year and they are preparing a very special performance indeed.
Long acknowledged as Africa's finest kit drummer, Allen was a key collaborator with Fela Kuti in the 1960s and 1970s and one of the creators of Afrobeat. He has since worked with artists including Damon Albarn (the Good the Bad and the Queen, Rocket Juice and the Moon), Air, and Grace Jones.
