Zane hosts Danny Brown on Beats 1, check out his insights below.
On the song "When It Rain":
"When I first heard the beat it reminded me of one of those old ghetto tech instrumentals we'll be like jitting to you know what I'm saying at the house parties and stuff. That's why I put the jitting in the video. To me that's what it reminded me of, just a Detroit party in the basement jittin' in a circle. It took me back to them days. That was like middle school days."
On the "When It Rain" video:
"I really got the idea from this Talking Heads documentary that I saw and I was really into that. I wanted it to look like that but I always wanted to put the jitting in there cause I know that's what made me start the song in the first place."
On his departure from Fool's Gold and signing to Warp:
"You know Fool's Gold is still my family, we still they still helping me out with this project. But you know it's time for me to renegotiate. Warp came in and I was always a fan of what they did too. They have a big strong history and legacy. I feel like I could progress a little more in that world."
On dealing with fame, touring and if it ever felt too much at moments:
"If I was in my twenties I probably wouldn't be able to cope. I probably wouldn't even be around right now. I'd probably be all mixed up in the game. But me being in my thirties I was never being able to go too far off the edge. I'd always be able to drive up to it and now how to back up. Every now and then I might hang off the cliff but I always pull myself back up."
On if he knows where the edge is:
"I know where it's at. I'm not even trying to go to the edge no more. I've been there and done that. I live past it now. You can only sky dive so many time before it aint a rush no more."
On the Talking Heads:
"Talking Heads were a big influence on this album. I was listening to a lot of Talking Heads and just studying. It started out with my manager buying me a book. I read about them before I even started to really listen to their music. He bought me the book about 'Fear and Music' so I was reading about that. The way they had prompted that album at that time and the way they was doing a lot of that stuff is what I'm incorporating into what I'm doing right now. Right now I'm messing around with Little Creatures. More so even their approach to how they brought it to you visually is what I'm more intrigued with. David Byrne is a legend. I look up to people like that and I try to incorporate that into rap music."
On what he listens to on his run:
"I like Lil Uzi I've been listening to that and of coarse the new Radiohead album. That one makes me a little tired when I'm running to it. I try to study it and take it all in and that's one of the best times."
"I realized if I wake up and run it's more of a relaxing day for me. It makes everything go by smooth. I guess I get all my frustrations, all my anxiety out with that run in the morning."
"Last time you put me up on Bjork. I listened to a lot of Bjork after that. So thank you to that influenced this album too."
