Echo & The Bunnymen singer Ian McCulloch has been cleared of assaulting two fans after a concert.

But the frontman was convicted of a lesser charge of breach of the peace by shouting, swearing and threatening Gary Duncan, 39, and his girlfriend Juliet Sebley, 34, backstage following a gig at Glasgow Barrowlands on October 23 last year.

The court heard that McCulloch lost his temper when he discovered the two fans in a toilet cubicle inside his private dressing room, reports BBC News.

Mr Duncan alleged that the singer then launched a verbal tirade of abuse, challenged him to a fight, dragged him by the lapels and repeatedly pushed him.

The couple said they had been invited backstage by a friend, and they denied a suggestion that they had been in the same toilet cubicle.

Despite admitting pushing the toilet door open and it hitting Selby, McCulloch said it was an accident and denied assaulting Duncan. He also said that he asked the couple to leave politely.

Stipendiary magistrate Robert Hamilton later found that the charges of assault were not proven.

He added: "I'm going to take a very lenient view. This took place in an area where there were very few members of the public."
