On Monday, Eugene McGuinness released "Sugarplum", the latest single to be taken from The Invitiation to the Voyage.
A song with its own uplifting and intriguing charm, "Cinema Paradiso" is a tribute to the romance of film and adolescent antics. Much like the art-form it celebrates, it suspends disbelief, offering two and a half minutes of nostalgic escapism.
Matching music hall-style piano with childhood memories, it could easily be seen as the foil to "Sugarplum"'s more mature, slick character. Despite being worlds apart in that sense, McGuinness once again toys with imagination, this time conjuring up images of popcorn-scented seats, back row experiences and flickering projectors to an animated tune that could easily slip into a world of smoke-filled speakeasies.
As an additional festive treat, listen to Eugene covering Ian Brown's "Dolphins were Monkeys".
