Morden, the new single by Good Shoes, is the greatest lyrical assault on the capital's grey and depressing suburbs since Weller gave Woking a pasting with 'That's Entertainment'. Harshly realistic and crisply witty, 'Morden' reflects the reality of growing up for most British teenagers, providing insight into why Good Shoes sound like they do and connect with their audience in such a genuine way. Packed into a tight 3 minutes Rhys Jones manages to fit in pound shops, greasy takeaways, casual racism, the whole tedious spectrum of suburban high street life. It's no surprise that wherever they play, this is always the song audiences shout for more than any other.
Good Shoes' recently released debut album 'Think Before You Speak' demonstrates their utterly unique take on punk and pop and comes from their open minded and unsentimental approach to music. While most bands cite a record collection full of influences, Good Shoes, like their young fans, listen mostly to the brand new music of their contemporaries. Although they've drawn comparisons with seminal bands such as Magazine and Wire, Good Shoes make their music without history or preconceptions, their dedication to creativity and artistic ability coupled with Rhys's pointed lyrics resulting in delightfully fresh vignettes on modern life.
Mostly though they have one thing in common with every great 'sound of the suburbs'. Every song belongs on the dance-floor. Quite an astounding achievement for four young friends, who continue to meet and rehearse in their garden shed in Morden.
