Round two of MTV's Musical March Madness tournament rolls on, and though the bracket may have busted for some — farewell, My Chemical Romance, Mumford & Sons and Foo Fighters — there are plenty of bands still battling it out for the big gold trophy, and they need your help to win it all.
Yesterday, pre-emptive favorites Paramore revealed their strategy to make it back to the title game — a whole lot of last-second magic — and, in the process, they also took a few shots at defending MMM champs Tokio Hotel. And today, we're letting another band take the mic.
That would be upset-minded underdogs Tegan and Sara, who blew out heavily-favored #5 seed the Postal Service in the opening round of the tournament, and are now pitted against another MMM powerhouse: 2011 champions Green Day. And though their road to the title game hasn't gotten any easier in round two, the Quin sisters still like their chances. Can they upset Green Day and advance? Well, they're being very Canadian about it, but, yes, they think another upset is in the cards.
"This is a really tough question, because anything that involves competition, I'm very Canadian; I don't want to beat anyone, and also, because I don't have that competitive vibe, I hate to lose," Sara Quin said. "So, it's very difficult ... I feel like maybe it's best if you all vote against us."
Ah, the old reverse psychology trick ... the same one Phoenix applied in round one, which didn't really work out, considering they lost to Arcade Fire. But, with plenty of time left to go in round two — polls close on Monday, April 1 at noon ET — maybe Tegan and Sara can not only prove that going negative works, but shock the world and end Green Day's dreams of a second MMM title. At the very least, they're determined to try.
"[Sara] is encouraging people to vote against our band," her sister Tegan laughed. "Which seems like a really good reason to vote for us."
