Green Day rounded off their batch of London shows last night in spectacular fashion by playing their latest album, ‘American Idiot', in its entirety.
The final date of four London shows â€" beginning with two nights at the Brixton Academy and ending at the Hammersmith Apollo â€" the Bay Area trio finally did what they'd been threatening to do since before the record's release and played an hour's worth of new songs, in order.
This was one of the few occasions that the band have chosen to perform their set in this way, the last being at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles just prior to Christmas.
“We always save the best for last,†said singer Billie Joe Armstrong to the 4,900 strong sold out crowd. “So tonight we're going to do something a bit special.â€
In the five months since its release, ‘American Idiot' has sold almost six million copies and has been recognised as the album that has re-invigorated Green Day's career. The piece was played with virtually no between-song interruptions and took up almost two thirds of the band's time on stage.
Despite the fact that the decision to play the hour long album meant that older, popular songs such as ‘Brain Stew', ‘Hitchin' A Ride' and ‘When I Come Around' were left out of the set, the audience reaction remained ecstatic throughout, with a word perfect audience attempting, and sometimes succeeding to outsing the band.document.write(unescape("
