Green Day won seven awards, out of the eight nominations at this year's MTV Video Music Awards.
Green Day won awards for best rock video and best video for Boulevard of Broken Dreams, as well as best group, the viewers' choice award and several technical awards.
Speaking after the show lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong told reporters, "It's nice to know that rock music still has a place on MTV.
"This kind of response, I don't know, it's like you're at the biggest party in the United States right now and the song that gets most nominated and most celebrated is the biggest hangover."
The California rock trio turned up to the star studded event in Miami in the vintage green convertible from the video for Boulevard of Broken Dreams.
"I thought we were going to win best rock video," said Brandon Flowers, lead singer for The Killers who picked up the award for best new artist, "but you just can't beat those Green Day people."
Meanwhile, Kanye West was the only rapper to win an all-genre award, with his Jesus Walks taking best male video, whilst Ludacris snapped up the award for best rap video.
Kelly Clarkson picked up best female video for Since U Been Gone. "My vote was for Gwen," said Clarkson in her acceptance speech. Gwen didn't lose out though, walking away with two awards under her arm.document.write(unescape("
