Green Day have already prepared a bumper crop of new material for their fans in the form of three upcoming albums , ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré!. But now they're upping the ante by throwing in a pair of documentaries as well.
According to Billboard, the band will accompany the three records with two documentaries chronicling the making of their three-pack and their early years. The movies are being helmed by filmmaker Tim Lynch, who produced the band's 2005 "Green Day: Bullet in a Bible" documentary and Tim Wheeler, who co-produced and edited "The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights."
The pair are working up a documentary on the making of the albums, as well as a second movie that will pull together classic footage of the band in the days before their 1994 breakthrough, Dookie. "It's not going to be the sitting down, head shot of me going, 'We started out blah blah blah'," singer Billie Joe Armstrong said. "We wanted to get into lifestyles of rock 'n' roll and playing rock n roll and letting the story kind of tell itself rather than create revisionist (history)."
The movie covering the making of the new albums will include footage of the band performing intimate club shows over the past year-and-a-half, as well as rehearsal and recording sessions. The two filmmakers will also tag along with the group as they rehearse for upcoming festival dates in Japan and Europe, with executives at their label hoping that the making-of film will be ready in early 2013 for a possible premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. No tentative release date has been given for the second doc.
The first single from ¡Uno!, "Oh Love," will be released on July 16 and the album is slated to hit stores on September 25.
