The trouble started when Williams was asked about the friendly bipartisan golf match between Republican John Boehner and Mr Obama on the Fox show and he replied: 'Come on! It'd be like Hitler playing golf with [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu. They're the enemy! Obama! And [Joe] Biden.'
The comments caused Williams' song to be dropped as the theme tune by ESPN - a big money deal.
In a rapid bid to explain himself, Williams, 62, issued a statement on his website: 'Some of us have strong opinions and are often misunderstood. My analogy was extreme – but it was to make a point.'
