Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has broken the previous US box office record for an opening weekend, raking in an astonishing $168.6 million (£105.3 million).
This comes as no real surprise, as it was expected to easily beat the previous mark, set in 2008 by The Dark Knight, which took in $158.4 million (£99 million) on its first two days of release.
The second part of The Deathly Hallows was released at midnight on July 15, with its opening day total of $30 million (£18.75 million) besting the 2010 release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon came in second place over the weekend, taking $21.3 million (£13.3 million), with Horrible Bosses, starring Jennifer Aniston, taking third with $17.6 million (£11 million).
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is currently on general release.
