Heavy D has passed away at the age of 44.
The rapper, real name Dwight Arrington Myers, was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital around midday local time and was pronounced dead an hour later.
The 911 call came from Heavy's Beverly Hills home to report that there was an unconscious man on the walkway, TMZ are reporting.
Heavy was apparently conscious and talking when the emergency services arrived and was transported to a nearby hospital but passed away soon after.
Police do not believe there is any obvious signs of foul play but will be investigating his death.
Heavy D performed at the Michael Jackson Tribute Concert in Wales exactly four weeks ago where he sang "Jam" with La Toya Jackson.
The performer had lots of hits over the years including Now That We Found Love and he performed the theme song for the show In Living Color.
He also forayed into acting and appeared in the movies, Life and Big Trouble.
He first made his name as the lead in the group Heavy D & The Boyz and also enjoyed a career as a record producer.
Heavy recently returned to the stage after a 15 year absence from live performances.
