The King's Speech actress came at the top of a new poll carried out by science-fiction magazine SFX to see who fans would like to see take on the role.
Episodes and Friday Night Dinner star Tamsin Greig came in second place in the poll, which was voted for by 2,000 readers on the magazine's website.
SFX's online editor Dave Golder said: 'The Doctor has always been an eccentric and actresses don't come much more eccentric than Helena.
'Of all the Doctors so far she is probably most like a female Tom Baker, though we can see little bits of Troughton, Tennant and Smith in there too.'
