Hugh Jackman has joked Anne Hathaway's spit "smells of roses".
The Hollywood stars appear alongside one another in the upcoming movie version of musical Les Misérables.
In one scene, Anne's character Fantine spits in Jean Valjean's face, who is played by Hugh.
"She really did spit in my face. It smelt like roses," he laughed to Australian radio show hosts Kyle and Jackie O.
"It was right in my eye, she was very accurate. I said, 'Babe it's OK if you just want to glob on, go for it!' And she did, right there!"
In order to portray her poor, starving character, Anne had to lose an incredible amount of weight in a short space of time.
Hugh watched her go through the process and is amazed by the 30-year-old's dedication to the role.
"I got to tell you, Annie, she so went for this thing. She lost 14 lbs in 13 days. She went for it!" he gushed.
"She was in the make-up trailer going through how they were going to do her hair, because they cut her hair onscreen. If you look closely, it's her hairdresser - who's a man - in a dress, because they didn't want to have an actor cutting her hair because it had to be right. So he's on there, if you look at the hands, they're definite man hands! She said, 'If you cut my head while you do it, that would be great, with the blood and everything.' I have the same haircut at the beginning, with cuts, and I was like, 'Err, for the record, I want make-up! You are out of your mind! You want this guy to literally cut your head?' She was like, 'That would be awesome!'"
The story is adapted from Victor Hugo's classic 1862 novel, which has also inspired a theatre production.
Hugh believes the film version will give people a new way to enjoy the tale.
"It's one of the greatest stories of all time. The book is 1500 pages, so now you can just see the movie! That's how I got through English at school!" he laughed.
