Iggy Azalea has issued a lawsuit accusing her former boyfriend Maurice Williams (also known as Hefe Wine) for violating her copyright, trademark, name and likeness.
As The Hollywood Reporter revealed Azalea's former boyfriend claims to be profitting from the stolen contents of her computer, including unreleased master recordings and the possibility of a 'sex tape', a claim Azalea strongly denies.
Azalea, then known as Amethyst Kelly, was living with Maurice Williams in Atlanta in 2009 when apparently "Williams downloaded the entire contents of Azalea's personal computer". These master tracks were then released in July 2014 when an EP by Azalea called Inizio was released online. Tracks included 'It Ain't Tricking,' 'U Ain't My Daddy', 'Take My Picture', ;Red Bottoms', 'Supernova' and 'Miss International'.
Azalea and her label Universal Music reacted by sending out cease-and-desist letters. The tracks were removed but then recently rumours began circulating about the existence of a sex tape, stoked by TMZ. Williams then claimed that had a legal contract with Azalea that would give him persmission to release the tape.
Azalea's legal team claims that the legal contract isn't genuine. "The Forged Agreement contains tell-tale signs that it is not genuine," states the lawsuit. "For example, it includes mismatched fonts on the signature page, paragraph numbers out of sequence, a signature line for 'Wine Enterprises, inc.' [sic] (rather than for an authorized agent), and provides, as an address for legal notices, the contact information of an attorney who had no prior knowledge of the Forged Agreement."
Although the existence of a sex tape is not mentioned either way the complaint mentions that the defendants came out with "promotional videos featuring an impersonator of Azalea."
Earlier this week Azalea addressed the controversy in a series of tweets.
I dont have a sex tape but for the record...
Anyone who releases or attempts to make profit off someone else's intimate moments against their will is a sex offender.
& it honestly makes me sick to see the media encourage any other attitude towards those sorts of people, we should want to protect our women
and i really hope that america will follow Europe and their laws to better protect peoples privacy and fundamental rights.
