Janis Joplin is coming to Broadway, at least in the form of Mary Bridgit Davies who will star in A Night With Janis Joplin. The show will begin previews on September 20 at New York's Lyceum Theatre and is scheduled to open on October 10.
The show was written and directed by Randy Johnson and has been playing regionally with Davies in the lead since 2011. The tribute show/concert includes an eight-piece band and three backup singers.
Davies has also appeared in another Joplin-based show Love, Janis and has sung with Big Brother and the Holding Company. She won the 2013 Cleveland Critics Circle Award for A Night With Janis Joplin and was nominated for the 2013 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Regional Musical. Mary released her debut album, Wanna Feel Somethin', in 2010. She and her band came in second out of 110 bands in the 2011 International Blues Challenge.
