Jessie J, Wretch 32, Adele and Tinie Tempah set the tone, with the most nominations at the prestigious 2011 MOBO Awards in association with Lebara Mobile. For the first time ever, this year sees brand new talent featuring in every UK nomination category, proving the sheer dominance of a new wave of musicians.
Now in its 16th year, the MOBO Awards have come into their own, having fully established themselves as the leader in its field, with a nod from MOBO being a pinnacle achievement for many artists. Following its triumphant 2009 Scottish debut, this autumn will see the MOBO Awards return to Glasgow on 5th October 2011 for an even bigger star studded ceremony.
The 2011 nominations welcome a burst of fresh new talent, who've made waves in the UK industry. Emeli Sandé, Ed Sheeran and Mike Hough include some of the recently signed and unsigned stars-in-the-making to receive a nomination, which are advised by The MOBO Awards' independent music panel of top DJs, music editors, journalists, broadcasters and other key tastemakers in today's music scene.
Having sprung from virtual obscurity over the past 12 months, Essex powerhouse Jessie J leads with an unprecedented 5 nominations for Best Newcomer, Best UK Act, Best Album, Best Video and Best Song for her stomping number 1 single "Do It Like a Dude". Shocked at her staggering 5 nominations, Jessie says:
"I am so honoured to be nominated. I have watched so many of the artists I look up to being nominated, winning awards and performing - its amazing to be in the company of such amazing talent. I can't wait to be there on the 5th. Thank you to the MOBO Awards and my fans for making this possible."
Other UK ladies follow suit, proving the impressive surge of female talent including the unstoppable Adele, who's up for 4 nominations, as well as acclaimed newcomers Katy B, Emeli Sandé and Yasmin.
Having already topped the single and album charts in recent months, North Londoner Wretch 32 joins Tinie Tempah as this year's top male nominees, each gaining an impressive 4 nominations. Bursting with elation at being nominated for Best Newcomer, Best UK Act, Best UK Hip Hop/Grime and Best Song for 'Traktor', Wretch enthuses:
"I grew up watching the MOBO Awards, so to be nominated for even just one award feels overwhelming. I was going to attend the Awards anyway but now I'll be at a table ahhh yeah lol!"
Chase & Status and new kids on the block Rizzle Kicks follow closely behind in the MOBO honour roll, with the dynamic duos both receiving a surprising hattrick of nominations each. Speaking of their first ever-national award nominations, the Brighton based teens said:
"We are completely ecstatic to be nominated for Best Newcomer at the MOBO Awards. A year ago we were unsigned and watched the awards on tele. We can't wait to go to Glasgow!"
Global superstars including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Nicki Minaj are all in the running for 2011's Best International Act. Dancefloor king Jason Derulo – who has just been announced to co-host the awards – is also vying for the coveted title.
The MOBO Awards are one of the few awards shows whereby all categories are voted for by the public. MOBO recognize the increasing importance of Social Media in the music industry and to artists and have welcomed social media into the 2011 ceremony with the Best Newcomer award in association with Lebara Mobile, being voted for solely via Facebook. All other categories can be voted for at www.mobo.com.
