If you knew somebody who knew somebody who heard it from somebody, you were probably there. And if you weren't, you'll say you were anyway. Fresh off the Saturday debut of his "Runaway" movie, Kanye West hopped up at the 600-capacity Brooklyn Bowl at 2 a.m. on Sunday for a surprise five-song set that sent the tiny crowd into hipster overdrive.
According to Pitchfork, the sponsor of the weekend's #Offline Festival, after hours of whispers that he might show up, Kanye busted out onto the stage of Williamsburg's Brooklyn Bowl decked out in his gigantic Horus head chain and equally oversize pyramid ring at a party celebrating the third anniversary of pal and DJ A-Trak's Fools Gold label.
Backed by A-Trak, Yeezy ripped off a 20-minute set that included a clutch of his recent G.O.O.D. Friday and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy smashes, including "Monster," "So Appalled," "Devil in a New Dress, "Runaway" and "Power," for which fans busted out the now-signature hand-clap intro. Described as loose and joyful, the set found the army of hipsters singing along to the instant classic chorus of "Runaway" and was capped by another surprise guest, Wu-Tang Clan master GZA, who performed "Liquid Swords" and a spirited "Shimmy Shimmy Ya."
The night also featured sets by Chromeo and rapper CyHi da Prynce.
It's not surprising that West was in an ebullient mood after the premiere of "Runaway," his ambitious, arty 35-minute meditation on fame, jealousy, ambition, ostracism, rebirth and creativity. Kanye has admitted that the movie is a thinly veiled metaphor for the fiery crash and rebirth of his career, which appears to be very much back on the rise.
