Katie Holmes dropped a bombshell last week when she announced that after five years of marriage she would be divorcing Tom Cruise. But before filing for divorce, did Holmes hint that there was trouble in paradise? It certainly seems like it. Six weeks prior to announcing the split, Holmes sat down with Elle magazine for the August issue and may have suggested that she was ready to move on.
"He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years. ... I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go," Holmes said. "So I want to focus on that."
Holmes, who began dating Cruise when she was 26, told the magazine that now that she is in her 30s, she is entering a new period in her life, finally becoming the person she wants to be.
"I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin. I feel sexier. I think in my twenties — it's like you're trying too hard to figure everything out. ... I'm starting to come into my own," Holmes, 33, said. "It's like a new phase."
And that new phase will have her being seen as Katie Holmes and not Mrs. Tom Cruise. Holmes reveals that even though she was married to the highest-paid actor in Hollywood, it didn't make things any easier for her in terms of her career.
"Things are not handed to anyone," Holmes said. "If anything, you work a little bit harder when you're in such visible circumstances."
It seems Holmes knew at the time that she was headed for a divorce since in her filing she noted that her relationship had been "irretrievably" broken for more than six months.
On Wednesday, Holmes was swarmed by paparazzi in New York while running errands with daughter Suri.
"I'm all right," Holmes told a reporter from the New York Daily News. "Thank you."
The August issue of Elle magazine hits newsstands July 17.
