Kelly Clarkson says dating her ex-boyfriends was like wearing a pair of ill-fitting jeans.
The American Idol winner is engaged to talent manager Brandon Blackstock, who proposed at the end of last year.
Prior to finding love with the music mogul, the 30-year-old had been single for some time and says it's all down to not meeting the right guys.
"I was dating skinny jeans and I needed Wranglers," she laughed to People magazine.
Kelly and Brandon have been together for a year and the Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) singer is amazed by how well things are going.
The star was overjoyed when her beau proposed but wishes she had been slightly more prepared for the occasion.
"Out of nowhere I just said, 'Thanks for being an awesome guy.' I've never been loved properly by a man, and I was just like, 'I thank you so much for that,'" she explained.
"[Did I know he would propose?] Not a damn clue! If I did, I would have worn something besides Uggs and a sweatshirt with no bra."
The couple are now getting busy, planning what they describe as an "earthy" outdoor wedding, to take place in the fall.
Things are also looking good for Kelly's career, with two new albums in the works and the Grammy Awards approaching on February 10.
She is nominated for record of the year, best pop solo performance and the best pop vocal album prize.
"I didn't know life could be this happy," she grinned.
