The block just got a little hotter in the Big Apple. A New York state senator is trying to put the heat on Lil Wayne after the YMCMB boss told on Monday that he isn't the biggest fan of NYC.
"Flat out: I don't like New York," Weezy told us when we caught up with in Las Vegas as he introduced his new line of sneakers with SUPRA. State Sen. Malcolm Smith was up in arms following that comment, and he announced he would be holding a press conference in Times Square on Wednesday (August 22).
"New York City is the birthplace of the Hip Hop music movement," Smith said in a statement issued from his office to MTV News on Wednesday. "Millions of New Yorkers listen to his music every day. His comments outraged his local fans and residents. The group today will be demanding an apology of the hip hop star. Lil Wayne has had misfortune in New York with recent gun charges and a jail sentence."
The misfortune that Smith referred to dates back to 2007, when Wayne was arrested for gun possession after a show at New York's Beacon Theatre. Wayne was eventually convicted on gun charges and served eight months on Riker's Island before he was released in November 2010.
Weezy's comments about New York came after we asked what it was like to perform with Nicki Minaj during her August 14 Roseland Ballroom show, a free concert she staged for fans after she and Tunechi cancelled her scheduled Hot 97 Summer Jam performance in June. "Last week was awesome," Lil Wayne said. "I believe everything happens for a reason and then you make the most of that reason. I think we made the most of it last week."
Does Lil Wayne owe New York an apology? Sound off in the comments!
