Of all the people you would expect to comment on the sacking of Sky Sports presenter Andy Gray, Lily Allen is not probably top of the list.
The singer posted on her Twitter account with the comments, “Oh deary me Andy Gray. Is it because he hasn't apologised? Men, eh? Tut tut.”
A statement by Sky confirmed that Gray had been given the push following further “Unacceptable” behaviour. Sky Sports Barney Francis also said they had “no hesitation in taking the action.”
The footballing legend and well respected pundit’s comments had included one about what women knew about the offside rule. In a way, you have to feel a little sorry for Gray considering the comments were made off-air and were purely him voicing his opinion…which I would think to be freedom of speech. Look elsewhere and you will find that 75% of comedians have made their living from saying very much the same thing.
Are we turning into a nanny state? A country where you cannot have a bit of pub-banter without being branded something or other? Perhaps Sky Sports should have a gander at Frankie Boyle’s Tamadol Nights on Channel 4 and see how comments that can be taken offensively should really be done.
