Linkin Park: New record is emotional

Linkin Park vocalist Mike Shinoda says the band's new record is "pretty emotional".

The rapper-and-songwriter has revealed that the group's fifth studio album Living Things deals with "more personal themes" but refused to share the exact meaning behind the new tracks.

The musician feels it is unfair to his family and friends to go into too much detail about life experiences that have shaped the songs.

"One thing about me is that I'm really hesitant to talk about the meanings of the songs," he told Kerrang! magazine. "There are two reasons and they are very specific and simple. The first is that I'm just a private person and I don't want to stick my family and my issues out there into the world. I just think that's unfair."

The Linkin Park star added that secondly, he believes each person reads lyrics differently.

By revealing the thought process behind the creation of a track, he is worried he might ruin the tune for some of the band's fans.

"We released a song a while ago and Rob [Bourdon, drummer] and I were doing some interviews. I talked about the meaning in more detail than I had done before and, afterwards, Rob told me that he thought the song was about something completely different," he said. "For him, I'd taken away from the song a little bit. He no longer had his connection with it. I don't want to put people in Rob's position. I don't want people to feel they are wrong about a song."
