Madonna: Duchess is so impressive

Madonna says Britain's Duchess of Cambridge is a "breath of fresh air".

The American singer has shown an interest in the UK's royal family after directing the movie W.E., which followed the romance between King Edward VIII and socialite Wallis Simpson.

Madonna revealed she has a soft spot for Prince William and his stunning wife Kate.

Kate has emerged as a global fashion icon and Madonna thoroughly approves of her conduct during public engagements.

When asked if she has followed Kate settling into the royal family since she married William in April last year, Madonna replied: "A little bit."

She then elaborated on why she is a fan of the 30-year-old brunette.

"I think she is quite charming and intelligent," the superstar added during an interview for UK TV show Lorraine. "She seems nice, and a breath of fresh air."

Madonna is embarking on a world tour this year to promote her latest album MDNA.

Her schedule will see her take to the stage in England over the summer – soon after celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee, which will mark 60 years on the throne.

Madonna – often referred to as the Queen of Pop - has joked that it is no coincidence both events are happening in a short space of time.

"It is the year of the queen," she smiled.
