Madonna has admitted that W.E. was a difficult film to make.
A movie loosely based on the life of Wallace Simpson, the singer has taken a beating from critics for the movie's script and - more personally - loose sense of directing.
She told BBC News: "There wasn't anything easy about it. I mean, absolutely nothing, it was all a challenge. From writing the screenplay, to finding a great production team to surround myself with, to casting."
Despite the savaging at the hands of critics, Madonna is still hopeful that her fans will enjoy the film, saying: "That would be awesome.
"I love the art of filmmaking. I love film, I've always loved film. The other reason is I love new challenges. That's no secret."
Currently showing at the Venice Film Festival, W.E. opens to fans in the US on December 9.
