Mariah Carey plays a field slave in The Butler. During a press junket interview and news conference for the film on Monday at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, she recounted an incident from her childhood, reports Yahoo!
She recalled when she was riding on a Long Island, N.Y., school bus when a student spit on her when because of the color of her skin.
In "The Butler," a scene shows a white woman spitting on a black college student (Yaya Alafia) after asking to be served at the whites-only counter.
"That actually happened to me," said Carey, 43, who is the daughter of a White mother and a mixed race (Hispanic and Black) father and grew up in suburban Long Island.
"I know people would be in shock and not really want to believe or accept that, but it did. ... That right there, that was almost the deepest thing to me in the movie because I know what she went through — and it happened to be a bus, as well. It was a school bus."
