Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas was awarded the Starlight Award by the Songwriters Hall of Fame in Los Angeles last week.

The Starlight Award was established to honour songwriters in the early stages of their career.

"I am so pleased that Rob Thomas will be the first recipient of our brand new Starlight Award, because he epitomizes the contemporary, fresh voice that resonates with young people all over the world," commented Chairman/CEO Hal David.

"His songs demonstrate a solid talent that is making its mark, and we are proud to recognize his achievement."

David himself is an established songwriting having written dozens of classics such as 'This Guy's In Love With You' and 'What The World Needs Now Is Love' with former partner Burt Bacharach.
