Mumford & Sons most listened to artist in the UK of 2010

Brit band listened to more times than Eminem, Rihanna or Katy Perry globally by Last.fm users

Mumford & Sons have taken the number one spot in Last.fm's countdown of the most listened to artists of the year in the UK. The top 40 hottest and most popular artists of 2010 have been compiled by the service, which is a worldwide leader in music discovery.

The band hailing from West London have also made quite a stir beyond the UK, notching up over 11 million scrobbles and ranking second in Last.fm's global Top 40 behind US newcomer Ke$ha, with her album Animal. Joining the two in the site's global Top 10 are more established names such as Eminem, Arcade Fire and Katy Perry. Ke$ha holds her own as one of three female artists in the Top 10, amassing over six million more album listens than the next female artist, Rihanna.

Despite Ke$ha's global dominance, Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More was scrobbled almost twice as many times in the UK and joins a further five home-grown artists in the UK Top 10, compared to just three US acts. But while UK artists may have a strong national appreciation, Gorillaz are the only other UK act to make an appearance in Last.fm's international top 10.

Based on Last.fm's unique 'scrobbling' technology, which allows users to keep a record of what they listen to from over 600 music players, the countdown provides a definitive view of what the site's music fans around the world have been listening to.
