If you were one of the, uh, millions of people who noted the rather striking similarities between "American Idol" champ Phillip Phillips' coronation hit "Home" and the vast majority of Mumford & Sons' back catalog ... well, you probably never felt alone, but at least now you can take solace in the fact that the Mumford guys basically thought the same thing.
In the new issue of Rolling Stone — which features the band on the cover — keyboardist Ben Lovett admitted that he was confused the first time he heard "Home," mostly because he couldn't remember recording it.
"I was like 'What's that? Did we do that?'" Lovett said.
Of course, Lovett was quick to add that he didn't think Phillips ripped off the band ... though he does take umbrage with the growing wisdom that recording a Mumford tune is a sure-fire path to commercial success.
"The only thing that makes me a bit sad about it is that if people think that's a good commercial move," he said. "I think that's just stupid. Because it's not about the setup. It's about the songs, how we're expressing our songs with this kind of accidental selection of instruments. That's not, like, a formula to go and sell records."
And, frankly, frontman Marcus Mumford finds all the "Idol" talk to be a bit "strange," considering that his band was started in opposition to everything the show represents.
"That's kind of what we're reacting against," he said. "When we started, it was quite fun doing what we're doing, 'cause no one else was doing it. It was like our little secret."
