The TV presenter and DJ confirmed the happy news on his radio show this morning.
Until now, the couple have kept Carey’s pregnancy details secret, revealing only that they have had a 'long journey' to parenthood, which included a miscarriage in 2008.
But when President Obama happened to ask about the 40-year-old singer’s pregnancy, Cannon says his wife couldn't keep quiet any longer.
While performing at TNT's Christmas in Washington 2010 on Sunday, the R&B diva ran into the US President and his wife Michelle Obama backstage.
Cannon told listeners on his Rollin' With Nick Cannon radio show: 'They, ironically enough, questioned my wife about, you know, 'So, what are you having – are you having twins?'
'And, at this point, she hadn't told anybody anything because doctors advised us to keep it to ourselves until we get further along.'
He added: 'And because of the excitement, because of the emotion, she was overwhelmed [and] she shared with the President and First Lady that we are having twins.'
