The Independent and i, Britain's fastest growing newspaper, reveals the radical shift in power on Twitter with its annual 'Twitter 100'.
The list, which will run in both papers on Thursday 1st March, reflects the extreme shake up of the most powerful Britons on Twitter, as the social media channel becomes increasingly populist through the velocity of its growth.
The Independent and i's Twitter 100 reveals the shifting power of music Tweeters with last year's entries, Lily Allen, Mark Ronson, Tinchy Stryder and Marina & the Diamonds dropping of the list entirely. This year saw new boys Olly Murrs (20) and Harry Styles (22) beat singer song writer Gary Barlow (43) and Elbow front man Guy Garvey (43).
This year's list, which is topped by Richard Branson (1), includes some of the biggest names in comedy, TV and sport with Alan Carr (3), Rob Brydon (4), Chris Moyles (5), Jamie Oliver (6), Eddie Izzard (7), Derren Brown (8), Arsenal's Jack Wilshire (9) and James Corden (10) all featuring in the top 10.
This is astark contrast to 2011's top ten list which included influential, yet not universally known, individuals including fashion journalist Hilary Alexander, business columnist and blogger Umair Haque and media entrepreneur Zee M Kane.
The new list, and Twitter's recent announcement of 500m users, demonstrates the channel's increasing accessibility and colossal growth as a mainstream provider of information.
The Independent and i has worked with the PeerIndex to compile the list using methodology to analyse who holds the most influence and power, not just who has the most followers. The list is based on how people respond to tweeters, the influence of their tweets and the number of re-tweets.
The Top 10 List is as follows:
1 Richard Branson
2 Sarah Brown
3 Alan Carr
4 Ricky Gervais
5 Rob Brydon
6 Chris Moyles
7 Jamie Oliver
8 Eddie Izzard
9 Derren Brown
10. Jack Wilshire
