Just days after pitch-slapping the 2013 MTV Movie Awards with a brand-new musical mash-up, Universal Pictures announced an encore performance for the cast of "Pitch Perfect" — a movie sequel.
The studio broke the news at CinemaCon (via /Film) that "Pitch Perfect 2" will hit theaters sometime in 2015, with writer Kay Cannon attached. It's not known yet whether stars Anna Kendrick or Rebel Wilson will return.
Rumors had been circulating since late last year that the studio was mulling a sequel. In December, star Skylar Astin told MovieWeb that he was in discussions with Universal regarding a potential follow-up.
"I do have a meeting with a Universal representative next week," he said. "And I know that Rebel Wilson had hers last weekend. It's definitely a talking point."
Since its theatrical release in October, "Pitch Perfect" has grossed more than $113 million worldwide, while its soundtrack has spent the last 28 weeks on the Billboard charts. In fact, Kendrick released a brand-new music video for her song "Cups," (directed by "Pitch Perfect" helmer Jason Moore) just days before the Movie Awards performance.
The cast, including Wilson, Astin, Anna Camp, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee, Ben Platt, Brittany Snow and Utkarsh Ambudkar opened the awards ceremony on Sunday with an aca-awesome mash-up of Miley Cyrus' "The Climb," Eminem's "Lose Yourself," Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop."
Universal also announced a 2015 release date for the sequel to "Snow White and the Huntsman."
