Reese Witherspoon had 'one too many' glasses of wine on the night of her arrest.
The 'Mud' actress was charged for disorderly conduct last month after verbally challenging a police officer who had arrested her husband Jim Toth on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) in Atlanta, Georgia - is fully aware she had overdone it on the alcohol that night and insists she and Jim 'know better' now after being disciplined.
Speaking on TV show 'Good Morning America', Reese acknowledged: 'It's one of those nights. We went out to dinner in Atlanta, had one too many glasses of wine. We thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not. And it's just completely unacceptable. And we are so sorry and embarrassed. And we know better.'
Reese - who has seven-month-old son Tennessee with Jim and children Ava, 13, and nine-year-old Deacon with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe - also revealed she even claimed to be pregnant when speaking to the arresting officer to try and prevent her spouse from being taken into custody.
The Oscar winner - who asked the cop the question 'do you know my name?' during the incident - sheepishly added: 'I have no idea what I was saying that night. I saw him arresting my husband and I literally panicked. I said all kinds of crazy things. I told him I was pregnant. I'm not pregnant! I said crazy things.
'You only hear me laughing because I had no idea what I was talking about and I am so sorry. I was so disrespectful to him. I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better.'
Reese - who played ditzy lawyer Elle Woods in the 'Legally Blonde' films - insists she has taken away some valuable life lessons from her arrest and doesn't plan on making the same mistake again.
She said: 'There were so many lessons learned. Absolutely. When a police officer tells you to stay in the car, you stay in the car. I think I've played a lawyer so many times in movies, I think I am a lawyer - and clearly I'm not a lawyer. So, I learned a lot.'
The couple are due in court in Atlanta on their respective charges on May 22 and May 23.
