The 49-year-old comedian made his profanity-laden compliment about the Victorian writer in trade magazine, Daily Variety.
Gervais was praising the US cable channel HBO – which helped produce his comedy series Extras – in a first-person piece for the magazine, he says: 'Now listen carefully. The Wire is the most audacious drama of all time.
'It may be the greatest TV show ever. Across all genres.
'I'll go further. The Wire is the most important fictional, social document since A Tale Of Two Cities.
'(Dickens was the coolest mother****** of his day, I'll have you know.)”
He adds: 'Dickens would have loved HBO. Any artist would.'
