The 50 year-old is starring in new drama Life's Too Short along with actor Warwick Davis.
In the show, Davis plays a 'showbiz dwarf' who runs a fictional dwarf agency where he steals other actors' roles for himself.
Speaking to UK newspaper The Sun, Gervais said: 'No bad can come from discussing a taboo subject. Only avoiding it and running away.
'When a kid points at someone in a supermarket and goes: 'Mummy that man looks odd.' The mother says 'shhh' and drags it away. Warwick would much rather parents spoke to him and they'd realise he's a normal guy.'
