Ricky Martin has expressed his surprise at Pope Benedict XVI's decision to resign.
Today The Vatican announced the leader of the Catholic Church would be leaving his position due to his advanced age.
Puerto Rican singer Ricky is shocked the 85-year-old will be stepping down at the end of this month.
"The #Pope resigns? I didn't know that was even possible. Apparently, the last time a pope resigned was the year 1415#IfYouRintrested (sic)," he posted on Twitter.
Over the years, the ageing religious leader has experienced health issues that include several minor strokes.
American actress Kirstie Alley also shared her amazement at the decision.
"So The Pope just announced he's stepping down...which I didn't know was an option... did you? (sic)" she tweeted.
Some stars are hoping this will be an opportunity for positive change.
"The last time a pope willingly resigned was in 1294 Hoping for a more progressive successor - imagine a pope more like Arch Desmond Tutu (sic)," Mia Farrow wrote on her Twitter page.
Actress Debi Mazar took a cynical stance when she heard the news.
"Surprised thr was no twttr announcement from the #POPE who recently joined.He really had nothing 2 say.They r supposed 2 die in service..hmm (sic)," she commented.
Meanwhile there has been speculation about who will take over from Pope Benedict.
Simon Pegg joked producer J.J. Abrams could be next.
"I think JJ Abrams has been approached. #pope (sic)," he tweeted.
