In March this year, the chart topper sent out an email, writing, 'I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man.'
Now the father-of-two has spoken out about the emotional moments that followed his announcement.
'When I realised, okay, I just pressed send, whoo, I was alone,' the 38-year-old has told Oprah Winfrey. 'I was in my studio alone for a minute. My assistant walked in and I just started crying like a little baby. I started crying.'
Reflecting on his choice to come out, Martin explained that his two-year-old sons Valentino and Matteo gave him the impetus to be upfront about his sexuality.
'I couldn't take it anymore,' the Grammy Award-winner conceded.
'It was too painful. But I guess the most important thing is my children. When I was holding them in my arms I was like, 'Am I gonna teach them how to lie?' Whoa, that is my blessing right there. Then, when I was holding my children I said, 'Okay, it's time to tell the world.''
