The 63-year-old rocker is releasing a solo album, I Feel Like Playing, as well as rehearsing for a reunion of 1970s rock group The Faces with Simply Red star Mick Hucknall replacing original band member Rod Stewart.
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the guitarist admitted that his incredible work rate is largely a result of him kicking his boozing.
He said: 'When I'm not on the bottle, I have a natural energy. I'm absolutely uncontrollable and on the go.
'I used to get high, and it was great, but I didn't need those drugs, or the false affirmation I got from alcohol. It was slowing me down, and I was starting to get bitter and twisted, saying things that weren't me.'
Wood also hinted that a new Rolling Stones tour could be announced by the end of the year, adding that he is 'due for a summit meeting' with the rest of the Stones.
He said: 'We all sit around a table and bull****. But it's really good fun to get all the boys together.'
He added: 'Everyone's got itchy feet – we'll know something by December.'
