Scarlett Johansson and Reynolds confirm marriage split

The couple released a joint statement announcing that they are going their separate ways after two years of marriage.

"After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage," they said.

"We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

According to US reports, the couple quietly split six months ago and Johansson, 26, has been living in Jamaica, New York, with friends.

The pair tied the knot in a private 2008 ceremony, which was held in a wilderness retreat in Vancouver – the 34-year-old actor’s hometown. The wedding was attended only by a handful of close family and friends – and no photos were released.

"It was my mission to have a moment of privacy, to do something for myself," Johansson said after the wedding.

"I was happy with the results of that."

Reynolds, 34, who was crowned People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive this year, previously told the US publication that the best thing about married life was, "You get to hang out with your best buddy every day."
