Selena Gomez has snapped up the film rights to Jay Asher's 2007 novel 13 Reasons Why.
The singer-and-actress will play Hannah Baker in the adaptation which has been picked up by Netflix. The 13 part series will deal with Hannah's suicide and the 13 tapes she sends to a variety of people to explain how they contributed to her death.
In addition to portraying the lead character, Selena is also due to serve serve as executive producer alongside her mother Mandy Teefey, The Wrap reports.
The pilot script has been written by Tony Award– and Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright for Next to Normal, Brian Yorkey, who will also serve as executive producer. The series will reportedly focus on a character called Clay who receives the tapes and instructions and tries to piece everything together.
This isn't the 23-year-old's first foray into acting, having started her career on Barney & Friends before moving to Disney series Wizards of Waverly Place. She has also starred in movies including Ramona and Beezus, Hotel Transylvania and controversial 2013 film Spring Breakers.
While Selena loves her music career and is currently busy promoting new album Revival, she has previously credited acting as being the craft that most shaped her as a person.
"Acting gave me a new perspective and developed my personality," she told German magazine Jolie back in September (15).
In 2013, Selena admitted she had even considered quitting music to focus on acting, however she finds singing therapeutic and couldn't turn her back on it for good.
"Initially I wanted to quit music, but that probably isn't ever going to happen," she told Britain's The Mirror newspaper. "I think I need to do more acting. I'm not super-confident in it, but acting is my first love."
Netflix has not yet confirmed an air date for 13 Reasons Why.
