Sly and the Family Stone unreleased material coming

Sly Stone will turn 70 on March 15 and, in celebration, Sony Legacy has announced that Sly and the Family Stone are the artists of the month for March.

Sony established the Artist of the Month in January to enable "new fans and deep aficionados the opportunity to focus on an essential figure in pop music history, whose principal catalog is a cornerstone of the Sony Music archives." January honored Janis Joplin while February was for Nina Simone.

The big news to come from Sony's announcement is that they are putting together a multi-disc career retrospective for the band which will include many previously unreleased recordings. The company's estimate is that almost one-quarter of the tracks in the set will be new to fans.

Sly & the Family Stone's repertoire of hits kept the Pop and R&B charts jumping for seven years from 1968 to 1975, starting with their three career-defining RIAA gold Billboard #1 Pop/ #1 R&B hits, Everyday People, Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Again) and Family Affair, and their string of Top 40 hits that began with Dance To the Music and included Life, Stand!, I Want To Take You Higher, Hot Fun In the Summertime, Runnin' Away, If You Want Me To Stay, Time For Livin', and more. Their RIAA gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums include Stand! (1969), Greatest Hits (1970), There's A Riot Goin' On (1971), and Fresh (1973).
