Spencer admitted the couple faked their split because a UK company was interested in giving them a reality show that would document their troubles - but the deal never happened.
The former Hills star, who has recently revealed that the couple are broke, told US Life & Style magazine: 'The divorce was real - just the idea behind it was different than most people's.
'Divorcing was the only way to keep Heidi's career going because everyone hated me so much.'
He added: 'Look at Sandra Bullock - her divorce from Jesse James was the best thing to happen to her image.'
