The Clientele with ‘God Save the Clientele’

The Clientele return with their fourth sun drench album of hazy, romantic tales of infectious pop. This welcome return comes after an extensive world tour that took the band to the four corners of the globe. Released on the 1st October the aptly title 'God Save the Clientele' sees the band grow and mature into a sound that has made them instantly recognisable and has won them critical acclaim across the board.

Emerging from North London this four piece combine idyllic, layered sounds and idealistically wistful imagery, penned by singer / guitarist Alasdair Maclean that would sit happily on the west coast of America as easily as it does on their native soil. This sound has been attempted by many of The Clientele's peers but has never been mastered with such skill and accuracy.

'God Save the Clientele' fittingly draws on The Clientele's vast range of influences. Opening with 'Here Comes the Phantom' we are instantly reminded of the pop-psych heroes The Monkees. This influence continues through the album in tracks like Winter on Victoria Street developing until the very end of the album, which closes with the sorrow filled goodbye of 'Dreams of Leaving'.

Moving through the album we reach Bookshop Casanova, the track that will appear as a limited addition 7" around the album, cleverly merges violins, guitars and drums to create an upbeat yet fragile indie hit. This track then washes into the psychedelic guitar work-out The Garden at Night that's like taking a tab of LSD and watching the walls melt away in front of you. Think, The Byrds or West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and you have hit the nail pretty much on its head!

There is a strong contemporary feel to God Save The Clientele which moves the album away from being merely a west coast copy-cat. Tracks like 'The Dance of the Hours' would sit comfortably with acts like Broken Social Scene with the use of haunting and repetitive whispering and delicate piano notes that keep this album fresh.

This exceptional album from The Clientele will move them from cult indie heroes into the main stream of credible artists.
