The Hives tour US with new LP

Swedish garage-rockers the Hives are ready to swarm the States this summer with a tour and a new album.

The band's third, as-yet-untitled LP â€" its first in four years â€" is due July 20, according to a spokesperson for Interscope Records, the band's U.S. label. Singer Howlin' Pelle Almqvist, drummer Chris Dangerous, bassist Dr. Matt Destruction, and guitarists Nicholaus Arson and Vigilante Carlstroem shot a video for "Idiot Walk" Thursday in Sweden. The song is expected to emerge as a single in June.

Compared with their previous effort, 2000's fiery Veni Vidi Vicious, the group's latest injects new-wave influences such as Devo into its stomping, guitar-powered assaults. The Hives began working on the album in their hometown of Fagersta almost immediately after wrapping up the final dates of their tour in support of Veni Vidi Vicious. The sharp-dressed quintet previewed a handful of tunes at the South by Southwest music conference in March.

Beginning June 3, the Hives are scheduled to play several shows in Europe, including the Download Festival in the U.K. and the Quart Festival in Norway, before heading Stateside for a string of dates slated to begin in mid-July.

Although Veni Vidi Vicious, the follow-up to 1997's Barely Legal, was first issued four years ago on the Swedish imprint Burning Heart the band was introduced to a larger audience two years later when the album was given major-label distribution and promotion through Warner Bros. and sold nearly 400,000 copies as a result. The Hives have since become Interscope recording artists.
